Opie x Wayfair
How a Cat Meme Ignited an Omnichannel Viral Campaign for Pet Week
What started as an organic, internal meme of my cat, Opie, erupted into a high-engagement, week-long social campaign across Wayfair’s primary brand channels. Recognizing a massive opportunity to tap into internet pet culture, I helped to architect a "hostile channel takeover" for Wayfair’s Pet Week. The campaign was a massive cultural and commercial success, driving an unprecedented 95% lift in engagement metrics over baseline channel activity.
+95% Total Engagement Lift: Outperformed historical channel baselines across likes, comments, shares, and saves.
Massive UGC Influx: Generated organic community co-creation submissions.
Zero Production Cost: Achieved record-breaking brand impressions relying entirely on organic capture, a “cat design” system, and character-driven storytelling.
The Meme that Started It All:
As part of Wayfair Verified, products are tested for durability, quality, and value (check out the Wayfair Verified campaign here). As a joke (because he is ALWAYS shredding my carpets), I made this edit of Opie as a “Verified Specialist” along with his unique qualifications for the position.
That single joke sparked a strategic question for our creative team: What if we subverted our own corporate trust framework? What if, for Pet Week, we let the animals become the Verified Experts? What would a cat test for? How would a dog rate durability?
With that simple subversion of our native platform mechanics, an organic social campaign was born.
Execution
Leaning into “cat speak” and the unhinged nature of an orange cat, we began generating posts from Opie’s POV. I created a mini design toolkit for Opie (borrowing from Wayfair’s brand colors but utilizing “bad” graphic design and fonts). Leaning into “bad Photoshop” and “MS Paint” vibes, I worked with the social team to generate some of Opie’s posts.

Our social media managers Kayleigh Phillips and Danielle Stapley helped shape the narrative of Opie’s takeover. Danielle responded as Opie in real time to comments, even creating a Gemini Gem for “Opie speak” to help her write comments throughout the week and engage with our audience.
Key Takeaways:
The Power of the Un-Corporate Narrative: Validated that leaning into raw, native internet aesthetics can fundamentally outperform traditional, high-production commercial assets, resulting in a 95% engagement rate compared to standard channel performance.
Community Co-Creation at Scale: Turned passive followers into active creative contributors, driving an immense spike in brand tags, comment velocity, and organic sharing.
People Love Pets! We continue to see high engagement on pet content at Wayfair, proving that pets are an important part of our customers’ family and home. We will take this learning and build on it as a performative engagement tactic.
